- The closure prohibits activities such as tree-felling for charcoal production and sawmilling
The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all forests in the state to curb deforestation and allow for natural regeneration.
In a statement on Monday, Shakirat Muritala, Press Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, announced the directive, following a top management meeting chaired by the Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge.
The closure prohibits activities such as tree-felling for charcoal production and sawmilling. The move aims to address widespread human interference that has severely impacted the state’s forests.
Commissioner Buge highlighted the urgency of the decision, citing the destructive practices of charcoal producers and sawmill operators.
“Illegal tree-felling for charcoal production and indiscriminate cutting of trees by sawmillers have distorted the ecosystem, ignoring procedures for reforestation,” she said.
The ministry plans to engage stakeholders through the Forestry Directorate to restore sustainable practices and protect the state’s climate.
Buge urged the public to comply with the closure, warning that violators would face penalties under state law.
The directive underscores the state’s commitment to combating deforestation and preserving its natural resources.
