- President Tinubu directs the National Orientation Agency to launch a campaign on the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers
- The initiative follows a tragic tanker explosion in Niger State, which resulted in over 80 fatalities and numerous injuries
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch an immediate campaign highlighting the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers.
This directive comes in response to the tragic fuel tanker explosion in Niger State, which claimed over 80 lives and left many others injured.
In a statement on Sunday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said the President expressed deep concern over the incident.
He urged Nigerians to avoid approaching accident sites involving fuel-laden vehicles due to the high risk of explosions.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Niger State, mourning the preventable loss of lives.
According to Onanuga, many of the victims were individuals attempting to scoop Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the overturned tanker.
The President has also directed authorities to provide comprehensive medical care for the injured and instructed security and road safety agencies to implement preventive measures against similar occurrences.
Onanuga added, “The President has mandated the National Orientation Agency to begin a nationwide educational campaign. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the serious risks and environmental dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers.”
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of public caution and proactive measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The campaign will focus on educating citizens about the hazards of fuel scooping and promoting safety at accident sites.
