The National Assembly has summoned the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, and the Director-General of the Budget Office, Tanimu Yakubu, to address the ₦9 billion allocated to the Ministry of Solid Minerals in the 2025 budget.
This decision followed a Monday meeting of the joint committee on Solid Minerals, chaired by Senator Sampson Ekong (PDP, Akwa Ibom South).
The summons comes after Bagudu failed to attend a scheduled appearance to discuss the “inadequate” budget allocation.
Last week, the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, expressed concerns about the ₦9 billion capital allocation during a budget defense session, stating it was insufficient for the ministry’s needs. Members of the committee shared his sentiment, deeming the amount grossly inadequate.
Following Bagudu’s absence, the joint committee reiterated its dissatisfaction with the allocation and summoned Edun, Bagudu, and Yakubu to appear on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Senator Ekong stated, “We appreciate the efforts made by the Minister of Solid Minerals to advocate for a higher allocation. However, it is disappointing that no adjustments have been made to the proposed ₦9 billion.
This joint committee rejects the allocation and insists the relevant ministers and DG Budget Office must address the matter.”
During the session, committee member Hon. Kama Nkemkanma from Delta State criticized the 2025 budget, labeling it as a “budget of sabotage.”
He argued that critical sectors needed to boost the economy, including solid minerals, were significantly underfunded.
The committee stressed that the summoned officials must appear to provide explanations and address their concerns.
