Floods have devastated Adamawa State, destroying 13,944 houses, displacing 52,000 people, and ruining over 10,722 hectares of farmland.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri disclosed these figures during a meeting with a Swiss delegation at the Government House in Yola.
The floods also caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including 14 bridges and seven culverts, disrupting transportation and communication. The impact has strained essential services such as education and healthcare across the state.
Governor Fintiri praised Switzerland for its support to victims of insurgency and displacement through agencies like the CRC, FAO, and UN Migration.
He emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration in flood risk assessment, disaster management, and capacity-building initiatives for local communities.
He also called for pilot projects and innovative solutions to prevent future flooding, stressing the importance of exploring funding options to support these measures.
Strengthening early warning systems and improving proactive responses were highlighted as key priorities for the state government.
Deputy Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Siamak Rouhani, acknowledged the recurring destruction caused by floods in Adamawa.
He assured the state of Switzerland’s readiness to provide technical support to help mitigate the disaster’s impact.
