12 die in Kwara road accident


A fatal road accident in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, has claimed the lives of at least twelve persons.

Many travellers were also injured in the accident which happened on Wednesday at the Oko-Olowo area on the Ilorin-Jebba highway at about 5:35 p.m.

A trailer with registration number AYE 218XC and another vehicle with registration number TTN 556 XA were involved in the accident.

The two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, according to eyewitness accounts.

According to reports, one of the vehicles involved in the accident was transporting cows and passengers from Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, to Ogbomoso, Oyo state, while the trailer was said to be traveling from Lagos to Kano.

Emergency responders and police officers from the ‘G’ Division Police Command, Oloje, reportedly arrived at the scene on time to take control of the situation, while the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The bodies of the deceased victims were evacuated by their families.

The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained; however, it was gathered that reckless driving and overspeeding contributed to the incident.

The FRSC sector commander, Muftau Irekeola, confirmed the incident, saying, “But I am still waiting for the details from my boys in Olooru unit.”

“I am waiting for the details from my boys. It was a multiple accident involving a trailer and one Canter truck,” he added.
