The Labour Party’s National Legal Adviser, Barrister Kehinde Edum, has stated that Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, is now aligned with Julius Abure, the party’s national chairman.
This development follows a Court of Appeal ruling in Abuja last week, which upheld the Labour Party’s March 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, affirming Abure as the legitimate national chairman.
However, a 29-member caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman, established by Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, contested the ruling, asserting its mandate from party stakeholders at an emergency convention.
The committee warned Abure to desist from presenting himself as the national chairman.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Edum confirmed that Obi is working to reconcile with Abure. He described the court’s decision to dismiss the appeal challenging Abure’s leadership as straightforward and conclusive.
“The Court of Appeal reviewed the November 13 judgment and reaffirmed that Julius Abure is the national chairman of the Labour Party. It ruled that the appeal was inconsequential and a waste of time,” Edum said.
He emphasized that Abure was never removed from his position, and the court only reaffirmed his leadership.
On Obi’s stance, Edum remarked, “Peter Obi hasn’t made any categorical statement suggesting he’s left the party. From what I know and believe, he is speaking with Abure and remains with us.”
