The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal says it will no longer hold its proceedings in the State.
The tribunal disclosed that it will now hold its hearing and adjudication in Abuja following its relocation from Benin City.
According to notice issued by the tribunal’s secretary, Mu’azu Bagudu, the relocation will take effect from Monday, January 27, 2025.
It stated that proceedings would continue at the National Judicial Institute (NJI) on Airport Road, Abuja.
“I am directed to notify all parties that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, has been relocated to Abuja at the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Airport Road, Abuja, effective from Monday, 27th January 2025,” the statement said in part.
Though no reason was given for the move, the relocation may not be unconnected to the violence from political actors involved in the litigation which has made it extremely difficult for the tribunal to continue sitting as sessions since its resumption this year have been disrupted.
Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress won the 2024 gubernatorial election.
