Nigeria’s Cyriel Dessers scored a late equalizer for Rangers, but Manchester United secured a dramatic 2-1 victory in their Europa League clash on Thursday night.
Dessers found the back of the net in the 88th minute with a brilliant shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. His goal cancelled out Jack Butland’s opener for United, which came in the 52nd minute.
However, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes had the final say, scoring a decisive injury-time winner to ensure his team’s triumph.
The victory puts United fourth in their group. A win against FCSB in Romania in their next match will guarantee their place in the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, Rangers slipped to 13th and must defeat Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise next week while hoping for favourable results elsewhere to secure automatic qualification.
In another Europa League encounter, Son Heung-min scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur defeated Hoffenheim 3-0 in Germany. James Maddison added an early goal to seal a much-needed victory for Spurs.
After struggling in domestic competitions and sitting 15th in the Premier League, Tottenham used the European stage to regain confidence. The win moved them to fourth in their Europa League group, improving their chances of automatic qualification.
- AZ Alkmaar edged past AS Roma with a 1-0 win.
- Fenerbahce and Lyon played out a goalless draw.
- Olympiakos claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Porto.
- Lazio defeated Real Sociedad 3-1.
- PAOK secured a 2-1 win against Slavia Prague.
With more Europa League action set to unfold, the race for knockout-stage qualification continues to intensify.
