Kaduna State is poised to become Nigeria’s hub for grape farming, with Governor Uba Sani pledging to provide seedlings, mechanisation, training, and support services to grape farmers to boost yields and production.
Governor Sani made the commitment during a meeting with officials of the Grapes Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria, led by its National President, Alhaji Abdullahi Dalhatu, on Saturday in Kaduna.
Kaduna already accounts for 85% of Nigeria’s grape production, with Kudan Local Government Area serving as the primary hub due to its favourable climate and soil conditions. The governor praised the association for promoting the state as a leading grape producer and reaffirmed his administration’s support for the sector.
“We are committed to supporting grape farmers in Kaduna State to improve their yield and increase production,” Sani said. “Grape farming has the potential to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve livelihoods in the state.”
The governor outlined plans to create an enabling environment for businesses across the grape value chain, emphasising that the initiative would not only bolster agricultural productivity but also drive job creation and economic growth in Kaduna State.
“With continued government support, Kaduna is on track to increase grape production and potentially position Nigeria among the top 10 grape-producing countries in Africa,” he added.
The governor’s initiative is expected to attract more investment to the sector while diversifying the state’s economy through agriculture.
