- The Nigerian Army expressed profound loss, describing the mascot as a loyal and dedicated symbol of the Division’s heritage
The 1 Division Nigerian Army in Kaduna on Saturday held a regimental funeral to honour its late mascot, Sgt. Dalet Akawala, who passed away on January 24, 2025.
The ceremony, presided over by Colonel I.A. Akabike on behalf of the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Major General Mayirenso Saraso, took place at the Division Headquarters Complex in Kawo, Kaduna.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, the Nigerian Army expressed profound loss, describing the mascot as a loyal and dedicated symbol of the Division’s heritage.
“Sgt. Dalet Danfari Akawala served the Division with courage and resilience, embodying our traditions and values. This ceremony is a tribute to a companion who brought pride and identity to the Division,” the statement read.
The funeral drew senior officers, soldiers, and their families, with prayers for the late mascot led by Lt. Col. Ugwu, Acting Deputy Director Chaplain Services (Protestant).
Akawala descended from the Division’s first mascot, Sgt. Farin Doki, who served from 1995 to 2011. Akawala faithfully carried on the legacy until January 1, 2015, when its foal, Sgt. Dalet, succeeded it.
The Nigerian Army’s tribute underscored its commitment to honouring all who embody its traditions, including mascots that hold a special place in its history. Full military honours were accorded to the late Sgt. Akawala for its distinguished service.
