- The protest follows a viral video by activist Omoyele Sowore
Armed police officers on Sunday night arrested activist Henry Nwodo at the Ruga-Fulani village in the Jahi 2 area of Abuja. Nwodo was reportedly planning a protest against alleged police harassment and extortion.
Eyewitnesses said five armed officers arrested Nwodo around 8:30 pm, seizing his phone and forcibly pushing him into a black, unmarked car. “He was beaten while resisting,” an eyewitness, Miss Rose, told Premium Times.
Nwodo, a member of the Take It Back Movement, was organizing the #OccupyPoliceHQ protest scheduled for Monday at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja. The protest follows a viral video by activist Omoyele Sowore, exposing alleged police extortion in Lagos.
Nwodo’s housemate, Emiola Osifeso, said the activist was arrested while buying rice at the night market. “His arrest is linked to the protest,” Osifeso stated, adding that local vigilantes may have tipped off the police.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate, is also expected to appear before the police on Monday in connection with the viral video.
