  • The convict stole four automated teller machine cards, an NYSC identification card, a driver’s license, a Samsung C5 gold mobile phone, and the sum of N2,050.

One Ayomide Olayemi has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for robbing an artisan and a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member of their belongings.

He was convicted and sentenced by an Ikeja High Court on Monday after he pleaded guilty to a two-count amended charge of attempted felony and stealing.

The convict was said to have committed the offences on Dec. 31, 2018, at about 12:00 p.m. at the Surulere/Ojuelegba axis in Lagos.

Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay sentenced him following a plea bargain agreement.

The judge handed down the verdict based on the recommended term of 10 years imprisonment as stipulated in the plea bargain agreement.

In her judgment, Nicol-Clay held that the court was satisfied that the convict had willingly entered into the plea bargain agreement and understood the implications of his guilty plea.

She said: “This court finds the agreed punishment of 10 years to be adequate in view of the convict’s admission of guilt and show of remorse.

“Ayomide Olayemi is hereby convicted for the offence of attempt to commit felony and stealing.

“He is hereby sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

“The sentence shall commence from the date of his remand, being Jan. 3, 2019.”

According the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the convict was first arraigned on Nov. 14, 2019, and initially pleaded not guilty.

NAN also reports that the convict later entered into a plea agreement and changed his plea.

Earlier, the State Counsel, Mrs. Titilayo Olanrewaju-Daud, told the court that the convict stole four automated teller machine cards, an NYSC identification card, a driver’s license, a Samsung C5 gold mobile phone, and the sum of N2,050.

The stolen items belonged to an artisan, Mr. Hunwanu Adebayo, and an NYSC member, Mr. Adekanmbi Olubusayo.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 76(6) of the Administration of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, and Sections 406(1) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015
