- While he did not specify the offences of those repatriated, he noted that the move was part of broader immigration reforms
The Federal Government announced on Tuesday that it repatriated 828 foreigners to their home countries in 2024.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the Interior Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed that the exercise was carried out by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
While he did not specify the offences of those repatriated, he noted that the move was part of broader immigration reforms.
Key measures include modernising border operations and integrating Nigerian passports into the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Public Key Directory, enabling global verification. Additionally, a centralised Visa Approval Centre has been established in Abuja to streamline visa processing.
To support these reforms, the government has built an 8.3-petabyte data centre, the largest in the country, alongside solar-powered infrastructure to ensure continuous operation. A new command and control centre now monitors all land and air entry points in real time, enhancing border surveillance.
The initiatives underscore Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its immigration systems and border security.
