Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has denied opposing the formation of a coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
Obi had initially dismissed calls for a coalition at a two-day national conference on strengthening democracy in Abuja on Monday.
However, in a statement released Tuesday by his spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, he clarified that his remarks were misrepresented.
“My honest interview was misquoted by several media outlets, creating a false narrative that distorts my position,” Obi said. “I am not against coalitions. I support them—not as a means to seize power but to position Nigeria for greatness.”
He emphasized that any coalition must prioritize the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, addressing critical issues such as healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation.
“Too often, alliances in Nigeria have been formed solely to take power, without genuine vision or purpose.
Such moves have only worsened our challenges, leaving the common citizen to suffer the consequences of poor governance. This is what I oppose,” he added.
Obi stressed that leadership should be about service, not personal ambition and that the focus should be on responsible governance that improves lives and secures a better future for Nigerians.
