- Prof. Usman Yusuf arrested by EFCC for alleged N4 billion fraud, including inflating ICT budget and awarding contracts to family members
- The arrest follows a 2018 petition detailing fraudulent practices during Yusuf’s tenure as Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested Prof. Usman Yusuf, a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), following a raid on his Abuja residence.
The arrest occurred at about 4:46 p.m. on Wednesday in the presence of his wife and children. Armed operatives took the professor of haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation to an undisclosed location.
Sources familiar with the situation revealed that the details of his arrest remain undisclosed, though it may be linked to his tenure at NHIS.
“The reason for his arrest is not public yet because investigations are ongoing. He is currently in custody and will assist detectives in their probe,” a highly placed source informed Daily Trust.
In 2019, former President Muhammadu Buhari dismissed Yusuf, seven months after a fact-finding panel from the Federal Ministry of Health recommended his removal over the alleged mismanagement of N919 million.
EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale, when contacted, said he would verify the information and respond. However, as of the time this report was filed, he had yet to provide further details.
