- Journalist Laolu Akande emphasizes the need for Nigerians to speak up after Amaechi’s claims about politicians exploiting the system without accountability
- Akande warns against the political cycle of forming alliances solely to unseat incumbents, urging citizens to push for democratic reforms
Nigerians must speak up and demand accountability following the recent revelations by former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, about the misconduct of the nation’s politicians, says journalist and former presidential aide, Laolu Akande.
Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television on Sunday, Akande described Amaechi’s comments as “compelling truths” that should spark urgent national reflection and action.
Akande expressed concern over Nigeria’s political cycle, where leaders, once out of office, form alliances to unseat incumbents without genuine plans for transformation.
“Our politicians are at it again. The moment they lose power, they start forming new alliances or political parties—just to remove the incumbents,” he said.
“They weaponize the nation’s problems to mobilize people, not necessarily because they want to bring real change, but simply to grab power for themselves.”
He criticized this approach, warning Nigerians against being repeatedly misled.
“You fool me once, shame on you. You fool me twice, shame on me. But if you fool me three times, shame on all of us.”
Akande urged Nigerians to break their silence, emphasizing that keeping quiet only benefits those who exploit the system.
“Silence is no longer golden. If people refuse to speak up, it means they are either benefiting from the rot or hoping to.”
He noted that many had criticized Amaechi rather than focusing on the critical issues he raised.
“A two-term Governor and former Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, made some damning revelations about Nigerian politicians. He stated that they ‘get away with murder’ and that without sacrifice, nothing will change in this country.”
Akande outlined four major lessons from Amaechi’s statement:
- Amaechi spoke the truth – Politicians exploit the system without accountability.
- Nigeria’s political process is broken – The current system no longer serves its purpose.
- Urgent reforms are needed – Citizens must push for democratic reforms.
- The time to act is now – Waiting any longer will only allow further decay.
He urged Nigerians to stop ignoring these warnings and take action to demand a better political system.
