The deceased were short dead in Rimin Auzinawa, Ungogo Local Government Area of the State during a public demonstration against the demolition of properties.
The victims were allegedly shot by security personnel after the locals trooped out to stopped the destruction of their homes.
According to reports, the demolished structures, primarily residential buildings under construction—around 40 in total—had previously been marked for demolition by the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA).
The land in question is said to belong to Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
A resident affected by the demolition, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed that KNUPDA had previously confirmed the properties were not located on university land.
“We had resolved all issues with KNUPDA, and they assured us that our properties were outside BUK land. But on Sunday night, KNUPDA officials, accompanied by security operatives, arrived and demolished the buildings,” the source explained.
“When residents resisted, security forces opened fire, killing four people, who have since been buried. It’s a heartbreaking situation.”
The State government is yet to issue a statement on the tragic incident.
