- The court also fined him N100,000
A State High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, has sentenced Professor Uduk of the University of Uyo to three years in prison for perjury and publishing false election results during the 2019 general elections.
Uduk, who served as the returning officer for the Essien Udim State Constituency election, was prosecuted by INEC for announcing fabricated results. The court also fined him N100,000.
This marks the second high-profile conviction of a Nigerian professor for electoral fraud. In 2021, Professor Peter Ogban was jailed for falsifying results in favour of now-Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Delivering the verdict, Justice Bassey Nkanang ruled that the prosecution had proven Uduk knowingly published false results, citing the 2010 Electoral Act. While the court acquitted him of announcing false results, he was found guilty of perjury and publishing fake election outcomes.
His sentences will run concurrently.
