TikTok Removes Over 2 Million Videos in Nigeria to Enhance Online Safety

TikTok removed over 2 million videos in Nigeria between July and September 2024, according to its latest Q3 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report.

The platform reported that 99.1% of these videos were taken down within 24 hours.

In a statement on Tuesday, TikTok emphasized that this effort is part of a global initiative to reinforce online safety while having a significant local impact.

“With over a billion users worldwide and millions of content uploads daily, TikTok continues to invest in technology to improve content analysis and assess potential risks. This enables the platform to remove harmful content before it reaches viewers,” the statement read.

The platform’s proactive detection rate now stands at 98.2% globally, making it highly efficient in addressing harmful content before users encounter it.

Between July and September 2024, TikTok removed over 147 million videos worldwide, with 118 million removed through automation. In Nigeria, 92.1% of all removed videos were taken down before users reported them.

The report identified the top policy violations leading to removals in Nigeria:

  • Sensitive and Mature Themes: 99.4% of these videos were removed before user reports.
  • Regulated Goods and Commercial Activities: 99.1% of violating videos were taken down before user reports. This includes content related to fraud attempts or the illegal trade of firearms and explosive weapons.
  • Mental and Behavioral Health: 99.9% of flagged videos in this category were removed before user reports. This demonstrates TikTok’s commitment to safeguarding younger audiences from potentially harmful content.

TikTok reiterated its mission to inspire creativity and bring joy, underpinned by a strong focus on user safety, well-being, and content integrity. The platform ensures a positive environment where users can create, connect, and enjoy content freely.

TikTok continuously invests in trust and safety professionals and advanced technology to uphold these standards and enforce its Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and Advertising Policies.

The Q3 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report underscores TikTok’s content moderation and safety standards leadership, ensuring a secure and positive platform experience for Nigerian users.
