- When their intended victim escaped into the bush, the gunmen abducted the female student instead
A yet-to-be-identified female student of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, has reportedly been kidnapped by unknown gunmen, while a stray bullet killed a woman in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Sources say the assailants targeted a male individual who was with the student along Polytechnic Road on Wednesday night. When their intended victim escaped into the bush, the gunmen abducted the female student instead.
“The man was driving when about five armed men blocked his vehicle and opened fire. He managed to escape, but the girl couldn’t. They took her after riddling the car with bullets,” a source told our correspondent.
Another source revealed that during the gunfire, a stray bullet struck and killed a woman who owned a shop under the power line, while a man sustained injuries.
The chairman of the Ogwashi-Uku vigilante group, Mr. Henry Chukwuka, confirmed the incident, stating that the Lexus 330 vehicle involved had been moved to the Ogwashi-Uku police station.
However, Delta State Police Command spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said he could not confirm the abduction but acknowledged an attempted kidnapping.
“There was an attempted kidnap, and the man ran away, abandoning his car, which we have recovered. His phone is switched off, so we are waiting for him to provide details,” Edafe stated.
As of Thursday afternoon, the kidnappers had reportedly demanded a ₦10 million ransom for the student’s release.
