  • There has been an uptick in the spate of abductions for ransom in Nigeria’s northern region in recent times.

Retired Major General Mahrazu Tsiga, former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has been kidnapped by gunmen.

Tsiga was abducted alongside several residents of Tsiga village in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Channels Television quoted an undisclosed local resident as confirming the incident, who stated that the abduction occurred on Wednesday.

He said the hoodlums, armed with sophisticated weapons, invaded the former NYSC DG’s residence.

The Katsina State Government and police are yet to comment on the abduction.

Eyewitnesses said Tsiga was among those kidnapped by the assailants.

Sources revealed that two residents were wounded and one of the attackers died after being mistakenly shot by his colleagues.

Katsina is one of several states in the North-Western and North-Central regions plagued by banditry.

The gangs, operating from forests in Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Niger states, have become notorious for mass kidnappings.

In 2023, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda established the Katsina Community Watch Corps (KCWC) to assist the military and police in combating the gangs.
