- President Tinubu approved N80 billion to reconstruct and upgrade Alau Dam, which collapsed September 10, 2024, causing severe flooding
- Governor Zulum expressed gratitude, stating the reconstruction will prevent future flooding and support the revival of agriculture in the region
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving N80 billion to reconstruct and upgrade Alau Dam. The dam collapsed on September 10, 2024, causing severe flooding in Maiduguri and parts of Jere Local Government Areas.
The disaster affected over one million people and destroyed numerous properties.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, Zulum expressed gratitude for the presidential approval, calling it a crucial step in rebuilding and improving the dam.
“I am truly pleased with this monumental approval. This decision benefits not just farmers, fishermen, and others relying on the dam for their livelihoods, but also supports our state government’s efforts to revive agriculture—our key economic sector—as we rebuild from Boko Haram’s destruction,” Zulum stated.
He emphasized that the dam’s reconstruction will prevent future flooding, which would worsen the already fragile situation in the region.
The Governor also acknowledged President Tinubu’s personal visit to Maiduguri during the disaster and the relief aid provided to victims.
Zulum assured Tinubu of Borno State’s continued support for his people-centered policies, aimed at national development and economic growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
