- The officers were found guilty of conspiracy, abduction, and extortion of civilians
The Abia State Police Command has dismissed three officers for their involvement in kidnapping and extortion, the force said on Friday.
A statement by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, confirmed that the officers were dismissed with immediate effect on 7 February 2025. They are Sergeant Jonas Nnamdi, Corporal James Daniel, and Corporal Ifeanyi Emeka, who were attached to different units within the state.
The officers were found guilty of conspiracy, abduction, and extortion of civilians. They will now be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for prosecution, along with their civilian accomplices.
Police say the officers were arrested on 29 January by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Abayi after being found armed with an electric baton, an assault rifle, and a Beretta pistol. They had allegedly conspired to hire a minibus, abducted several civilians along the Port Harcourt Expressway, and demanded ransom from their families.
An internal investigation and orderly room trial confirmed their involvement in the offences, which the police described as “unprofessional conduct prejudicial to discipline.”
Following their dismissal, the officers’ uniforms and weapons have been retrieved, and they no longer serve in the Nigeria Police Force.
