The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi State has lifted its earlier ban on gas cylinders for student cooking but restricted usage to only 3kg cylinders.
During the orientation ceremony for newly admitted students on Sunday, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sa’id Umar, announced the decision.
After reviewing the policy, he explained that the university aligned its regulations with other institutions, allowing only 3kg cylinders. Any student found using a larger cylinder will have it confiscated.
Umar added that in collaboration with the Student Union Government (SUG), the Student Affairs Division has drafted guidelines on gas cylinder usage and hostel management.
Federal Fire Service spokesman Umar Lawal warned students about fire hazards, noting that 90% of fire incidents stem from negligence, carelessness, and ignorance.
He advised against overloading electrical appliances, as this significantly increases the risk of fire outbreaks in hostels and other areas.
“Fire safety is crucial in all aspects of life. Preventing fires saves lives, properties, and our environment,” Lawal stated.
A former university director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Andee Iheme, delivered a paper titled ‘Don’t Lose Focus.’ He urged students to adhere to institutional rules and regulations, emphasizing the importance of discipline and responsibility in their academic journey.
