- Despite the severity of the case, the officers had not faced disciplinary action until now
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has summoned the officers involved in the shooting of 27-year-old caterer Tomiwa Oni at a checkpoint in Itele, Ota.
The incident occurred on July 24, 2024, when Oni, returning from work the previous night, was stopped by police along the Lafenwa-Ota Road.
According to reports, the officers demanded money, and when she was unable to provide it, one of them allegedly fired a shot that pierced her car, hitting her stomach and severely injuring her womb.
Despite the severity of the case, the officers had not faced disciplinary action until now. However, following an intervention by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the officers have been ordered to report to the Ogun State Police Command headquarters in Abeokuta.
A police source told PUNCH Metro that the order was given on Saturday but was delayed until Monday due to the weekend. “The officers have been asked to bring their belongings, but we don’t know what the outcome will be,” the source said.
While the command has yet to release the officers’ identities, it is understood that they include four men and one woman.
Before the summon, Commissioner Ogunlowo led a team from the IGP’s office to visit Oni at her home in Ota, reassuring her of police support and promising disciplinary action against those responsible.
Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed the visit, stating that it aimed to assess Oni’s recovery and offer further assurances of justice.
