President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the creation of a National Paramilitary Academy to enhance security training in Nigeria.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this in a statement released by his media aide, Babatunde Alao, on Thursday.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of establishing a degree-awarding institution, similar to the Nigerian Defence Academy, to train young individuals in paramilitary operations.

“We need a degree-awarding institution, like the Nigerian Defence Academy, to train young persons after securing admissions through the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

“When they graduate, they will emerge as officers, properly trained to contribute to national security,” he stated.

Additionally, the minister revealed that the president approved employing 50 doctors and 100 nurses to address the healthcare needs of inmates in custodial centers nationwide.

He also secured approval for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to deploy medical doctors to custodial centers during their service year to uphold the rights of vulnerable individuals in society.

Furthermore, Tinubu approved an extension of service beyond retirement age for medical personnel in the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to address immediate shortages in the sector.
