Civil servants in Abia State have lauded Governor Alex Otti for fully implementing the minimum wage adjustment, ensuring equitable pay for workers across salary levels 1 to 17.
The agreement was signed at the Government House in Umuahia, where the governor, represented by his chief of staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, urged workers to uphold their responsibilities and contribute to the state’s development.
“I want to thank you for showing great commitment to the new Abia. We believe that every Abia worker will now see that to whom much is given, much is also expected,” Ajagba said.
The adjustment primarily benefits workers on salary levels 8 to 17, who were initially excluded from the October 2024 minimum wage implementation. After negotiations involving over 115 labour leaders, the governor directed a correction process that began on December 6, 2024.
Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia, Comrade Ogbonnaya Okoro, described the development as a major victory, affirming that Governor Otti prioritises workers’ welfare.
While labour leaders welcomed the new wage structure, they also urged the government to consider paying arrears for December 2024 and January 2025. Workers are expected to start receiving the revised salaries with their February pay.
In appreciation, civil servants pledged to redouble their efforts in supporting the government’s transformation agenda and plan to publicly celebrate the wage adjustment.
