- Slam Rector for pushing for conversion
- Ask Rector to tender apology
The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has kicked against the proposed conversion of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos State, into a university.
NAPS also accused the Rector and the entire management of Yaba College of Technology for lobbying for the Conversion of the College of Technology to a University.
The students’ body in a statement issued by its National President, Oyewumi Festus Ayomide on Saturday while advocating against the deviation of Polytechnics from its aims and objectives, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ignore Polytechnic Rectors clamouring for conversion of their institutions.
The statement reads partly: “ The Leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Students ( NAPS) after reading through some news about the Conversion of Yabatech to University in a statement made by the Minister For Education during his Visit to the College in Lagos, it was stated clearly that the Management of the Institution were the one pushing forth for the conversion base on the numbers of the Professors in the Institution, this become a pain to the heart of the Leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Students ( NAPS), the Rector and the Management of Yabatech didn’t Consider the aims and Objectives of the Formation of Polytechnic Education in Nigeria, what they are after is their personal interest of been equal with their Counterpart in the University. As a body, we don’t think it is by force for anyone to work in the Polytechnic, if what they are after is not in the interest of the advancement of Technical and Polytechnic Education but the enjoyment or benefits that the University Lecturers and Vice Chancellor are enjoying that is more important to them, they can resign from Polytechnic System and join the University System rather than Jeopardizing the Aims and Objective for the Formation of Polytechnic Education in Nigeria.
“NAPS is using this medium to sound warning to all Rectors and management who are pushing forth similar idea on their Institution to be Converted to University, to desist from such move, if such occur again the entire Polytechnic Students will be Mobilize to such Polytechnic and demand the removal of such Rector and key Management staff. Enough is enough.
“We are equally calling President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to listen to such appeal from anyone. President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a lover of Technical and Polytechnic Education in Nigeria, he has demonstrated this by given approval for Establishment of Federal Polytechnic in Abuja, we love what Asiwaju is doing and no selfish Rector or Management of Polytechnic should come and tanish the good image of President among the Polytechnic Students in Nigeria.
NAPS, while attributing the development to the discrimination in the HND certificate, equally called for the removal of HND/Bsc dichotomy in no time.
“The HND/Bsc Dichotomy is one of the great enemy facing the progress of Polytechnic Education in Nigeria and the Federal Government has not taken a good stand to address this critical issue, and that is why this issue of conversion is in the Heart of many Management of different Institutions, their Counterpart in the University see them as lower to them which is uncalled for, we are strongly appealing to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to kindly revisit the Bill to Abolish HND/Bsc Dichotomy passed by the 9th Assembly.
“It’s no longer news regarding the Issue of Polytechnic Education,HND/Bsc Dichotomy, a lot has been done on this subject matter, as well as a lot of paper has been submitted by different bodies in respect to the Polytechnic Education in Nigeria, lot of effort has been channel to this, some Senators and Honourable Members tried all they could do at 9th Assembly but all to no avail to this moment.
“Polytechnic Education should not be cripple in Nigeria if we are really dreaming for a better Nigeria, Considering the importance of the technical contribution to the growth of this Nation, no Country grow or develop beyond her technology capacity, technology is the bedrock of any Nation.
“The Polytechnic Products are doing extremely well in the Manufacturing industry, Accounting, Engineering, among many other fields, if today because of selfish Interests of Leaders and the Polytechnic Education were cripple ,where is the future of Industrialization in Nigeria, are we going to continue as Consuming Nation because of sentiment.
“In conclusion, the Rector and the entire Management of Yaba College of Technology disappointed the Entire Polytechnic Students in Nigeria, need to apologize and desist from such move immediately.”
