- The accident triggered protests by students, prompting security concerns
The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has been shut down indefinitely following the deaths of five students in a road accident.
The university’s management announced the closure on Wednesday, instructing all students to vacate the campuses by noon on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Monday near the Felele area of Lokoja, when a trailer reportedly lost control and crashed into a shuttle bus carrying students. Several others sustained injuries.
The accident triggered protests by students, prompting security concerns. In response, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, held an emergency meeting with management and security agencies before deciding to shut down the institution.
“The decision was taken in the interest of peace and to prevent further escalation of tension,” the university said in a statement.
Authorities have urged students to remain calm as investigations into the accident continue.
The indefinite closure has raised concerns among students and parents about the disruption of academic activities.
