Nigeria is incurring an annual loss of approximately ₦23 billion and 700,000 jobs due to the widespread consumption of animal hides and skins, locally known as ‘gbomo’, according to Livestock Development Minister Mukhtar Maiha.

Speaking at a ministerial briefing in Abuja, Maiha highlighted the economic and health implications of this practice, noting that traditional processing methods could pose cancer risks.

To address these challenges, the minister outlined a strategic plan to expand Nigeria’s livestock market from its current $32 billion to $74 billion by 2035. This initiative aims to boost livestock production, improve animal health, enhance food security, promote inclusivity, and strengthen governance within the sector.

Maiha also announced partnerships with international investors and agencies from countries including Brazil, China, Denmark, and the United States. These collaborations will focus on meat processing, dairy production, animal health, feed production, and cold-chain logistics, positioning Nigeria as a regional and global hub for livestock production and export.
