The victim’s grandfather, Olaseinde Sunday, later reported the incident at about 6:39 pm.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Saturday

Odutola noted that upon the information, the Odeda divisional police officer deployed officers, alongside a surveillance team to the scene to rescue the victim.

She revealed that due to poor visibility as night fell, rescue efforts were postponed and local divers have been contacted to assist in retrieving the body, as the search will resume at dawn.

Odutola said, ”The Divisional Police Officer has launched an investigation and search operation following the tragic drowning of a 19-year-old, Oluwaferanmi Olasupo, at an abandoned quarry pool near Eseke village, Odeda, on February 21, 2025.

“According to reports, the victim, an inexperienced swimmer, had gone to the quarry site with friends to swim when he drowned.

“His grandfather, Olaseinde Sunday, reported the incident to the police at about 6:39 pm after being informed by villagers.

“Meanwhile, the victim’s friends, who were present at the scene, fled and are currently in hiding”.

According to a police spokesperson, the parents of his fleeing friends have been asked to produce their children for interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation.

Odutola argued that the incident highlights the dangers of swimming in dangerous water bodies, especially abandoned quarry sites, urging members of the public to be cautious and stay away from such dangerous regions
