The Edo State Police Command has arrested a local vigilante member in Benin for allegedly killing an artisan and setting his body ablaze.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, said the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Textile Mill Road Division following a distress call from residents at about 8 a.m. on 20 February.
According to Yamu, the Divisional Police Officer received a report of a burning corpse beneath a heap of sawdust. The victim was identified as a middle-aged man, Lasan Osaze Erhabor.
“The DPO mobilised and deployed his operatives to the scene and actually found the corpse burning under the sawdust,” Yamu said.
He added that the victim’s body was taken to a hospital, where medical personnel discovered a gunshot wound on his back.
The suspect, who served as the security personnel at the sawmill where the incident occurred, is currently in police custody.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry. Yamu assured the public that the suspect would face murder charges upon the completion of the investigation.
