- Mr Abdullahi said the suspects had been targeting ministries and government agencies in the state
Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kano State have arrested two men for allegedly impersonating civil defence personnel and extorting money from government officials.
The suspects, identified as Muhammad Sarari, 43, from Goron Dutse in Dala Local Government Area, and Madaki Zaharaddeen, 32, of Hotoro Quarters in Nassarawa Local Government Area, were apprehended in Kano, according to the command’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Abdullahi.
Mr Abdullahi said the suspects had been posing as civil defence staff, targeting ministries and government agencies in the state. “They used to storm some ministries and agencies, intimidating top government officials and extorting money from them,” he said in a statement on Monday.
Their alleged scheme unravelled when they entered the premises of a prominent television station in Kano and attempted to intimidate a senior management staff member into handing over cash.
Personnel from the NSCDC’s Tarauni Divisional Office arrested the men and took them to the state headquarters for questioning. During the investigation, both suspects reportedly confessed to the crime.
Officials said a fake NSCDC identity card and an inner garment bearing the corps’ logo were recovered from one of the suspects.
The suspects are expected to be charged with impersonation of a public servant, conspiracy, intimidation, and extortion, Mr Abdullahi added.
