Abia State Government will on Wednesday unveil AbiaFIRST (Fostering Innovation and Reform for School Transformation), a new education reform initiative aimed at modernising the state’s education sector.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, said the initiative would introduce institutional reforms, integrate digital learning, and enhance teacher capacity to equip students with global skills.
The programme, a partnership between the state government and the Education Reform and Innovation Team (ERIT), has so far trained 218 master trainers and 2,000 master teachers, with plans to reach all 8,000 teachers in the state.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Uchechukwu Kanu, said AbiaFIRST would focus on early childhood education, vocational training, digital learning tools, and community engagement. She noted that an inter-agency coordination mechanism would ensure smooth implementation.
Mrs Abolaji Osime, ERIT’s Team Leader, added that extensive research and stakeholder engagement since 2023 had informed the initiative’s strategies.
The AbiaFIRST initiative aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s vision to make Abia State a leader in Nigeria’s education sector.
