Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has provided a N50 million grant to Kaduna State’s First Lady, Hajiya Hafsat Uba Sani. This initiative aims to support 1,000 women running small businesses in the state.
Each beneficiary will receive N50,000 to boost their businesses. Senator Tinubu directed Hajiya Hafsat, who also serves as the State Coordinator for the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), to oversee the distribution.
At the Umaru Yar’Adua Conference Centre, she presented a symbolic cheque under the RHI program. The event took place on Monday.
Alongside the grant, Senator Tinubu distributed 10,000 professional kits for midwives in North-West states, including Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
The kits, donated by an anonymous global benefactor, include 10,000 scrubs and 10,000 pairs of Crocs. They were distributed to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.
The First Lady emphasized that these kits support the Federal Government’s retraining program for 120,000 frontline health workers nationwide. She assured that all six geopolitical zones will receive the same allocation.
She noted that the North-Central Zone had received its share during her visit to Kwara State in January. The South-South Zone is next in line.
Senator Tinubu highlighted RHI’s commitment to improving lives through interventions in agriculture, economic empowerment, education, health, and social investment. Since its launch in 2023, the initiative has impacted families across Nigeria.
Governor Uba Sani praised the First Lady’s efforts, calling the kit distribution a significant step toward improving maternal healthcare. He stressed that maternal mortality remains a pressing issue, particularly in rural areas with limited healthcare access.
He acknowledged the vital role of midwives and nurses in grassroots healthcare and urged for their welfare to be prioritized. He also emphasized the importance of providing them with proper protective gear to maintain hygiene and infection control.
Governor Sani reaffirmed Kaduna State’s commitment to supporting midwives and nurses. He revealed that the state has recruited 100 ad-hoc midwives and continuously trains healthcare workers.
Additionally, the government has upgraded 290 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) with modern equipment, leading to a decline in maternal and child mortality rates. This year, 255 more PHCs will be upgraded, with 143 already under construction.
He expressed optimism that these efforts will enhance healthcare delivery and ensure better outcomes for mothers and children in Kaduna State.
