- The abductions come on the heels of recent kidnappings in the Bwari, Kuje, and Gwagwalada areas
Gunmen have kidnapped an unspecified number of motorists and passengers near the Abacha Barracks bypass in Guzape, Abuja, late on Tuesday night, marking another violent incident in Nigeria’s capital.
The attack occurred around 11:31 pm on February 25, intensifying fears among residents as insecurity continues to grip the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The abductions come on the heels of recent kidnappings in the Bwari, Kuje, and Gwagwalada areas, where armed gangs seized dozens of people, including schoolchildren and commuters.
Police intelligence sources confirmed the latest attack, revealing that officers responding to a distress call discovered two abandoned vehicles at the scene: a black Toyota Prado Land Cruiser, reportedly belonging to Hon. Shagala Samuel, and a Honda Civic.
“It is suspected that the occupants of the vehicles may have been abducted by the armed assailants,” a source told Zagazola Makama, adding that security personnel combed the surrounding areas and nearby bushes but found no trace of the victims or the kidnappers.
In response, security operatives have been placed on high alert at major entry and exit points of the FCT. The abandoned vehicles have been recovered as part of the ongoing investigation.
The FCT Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit is reportedly intensifying efforts to locate the abducted individuals and apprehend those responsible for the rising wave of kidnappings in Abuja.
The capital has witnessed a surge in abductions recently. In January, gunmen kidnapped over a dozen residents in Bwari, demanding hefty ransoms. Kuje has also seen a series of abductions, leaving families distressed and negotiating with captors.
The growing insecurity in Abuja highlights broader concerns over lapses in the nation’s security infrastructure, prompting calls for urgent action to safeguard residents.
