- The police admitted responsibility for the suspects’ escape
The Anambra State Police Command has cautioned against inflammatory comments following the escape of two suspects linked to the murder of lawmaker Justice Azuka.
In a statement on Thursday, police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga urged restraint, warning that unverified information could escalate tensions and hinder ongoing investigations.
Azuka, who represented Onitsha North 1 Constituency, was abducted on 24 December along Ugwunapampa Road. His decomposing body was found at the Second Niger Bridge on 6 February.
The police admitted responsibility for the suspects’ escape, stating that the officers involved are under investigation and will face sanctions.
“The command remains committed to re-arresting the fleeing suspects and ensuring justice is served,” Ikenga said.
Anambra has witnessed a series of violent attacks, including the 2022 beheading of lawmaker Okechukwu Okoye and the abduction of local officials.
