Chairman Sule Enehe urged taxpayers to fulfill obligations promptly, highlighting tax revenues fund essential projects like roads and education
The Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) has warned illegal revenue collectors sternly, urging them to desist from their activities or face arrest and prosecution.
Speaking in Lokoja on Thursday, the state Chairman of KGIRS, Alhaji Sule Salihu Enehe, emphasized that anyone caught engaging in unauthorized revenue collection would face the full wrath of the law.
To tackle the issue, KGIRS has implemented a structured approach to identify and apprehend illegal revenue collectors operating in the state.
“It is a crime to collect government revenue illegally. KGIRS is the only legally recognized body responsible for tax and revenue collection in Kogi State,” Enehe stated.
He further clarified that no associations or unions are permitted to collect revenue on behalf of the government. “Anyone caught violating this law will be prosecuted. Some offenders are already facing trial,” he added.
The KGIRS chairman also urged residents who have yet to fulfill their tax obligations to do so promptly, benefiting the state.
He stressed that timely tax payments would enable the government to fund essential services such as education, healthcare, roads, and water supply.
“When you declare your income and pay your tax on time, the government gains the financial resources to execute meaningful projects for the people’s benefit,” he noted.
Enehe highlighted recent government initiatives funded by tax revenue, including road projects such as the Zone 8 Roundabout–Barrack–Zango–GYB Junction Road and Zone 8 Roundabout–CBN–High Court Road.
He also mentioned the payment of WAEC, JAMB, and BECE fees for students in public schools as part of the state’s commitment to taxpayers.
He urged all residents to comply with tax regulations, emphasizing that taxation is vital to the state’s development and infrastructure improvement.
