The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on Muslims nationwide to look for the 2025 (1446 AH) Ramadan moon on Friday.
In a statement signed by NSCIA Secretary-General Prof. Is-haq Oloyede on Thursday, the Sultan emphasized the importance of moon sightings in determining the start of Ramadan.
“Following the recommendation of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), the President-General urges Nigerian Muslims to observe the crescent of Ramadan 1446 AH immediately after sunset on Friday, 28th February 2025, which corresponds to 29th Sha’aban 1446 AH.
“If credible witnesses sight the crescent that evening, His Eminence will declare Saturday, 1st March 2025, as the first day of Ramadan 1446 AH. However, if the moon is not sighted, ” Sunday, 2nd March 2025, will automatically mark the first day of Ramadan,” the statement read.
The council prayed for Allah to grant all Muslims the opportunity to partake in the spiritual blessings of the holy month.
Additionally, the council advised that, in addition to traditional Islamic leaders in various communities, members of the NMSC can also be contacted to confirm credible moon sightings.
Amid ongoing economic challenges, the council urged well-off Muslims to support the less privileged before, during, and after Ramadan.
“The council also cautions traders against hoarding food products or inflating prices during the fasting period,” the statement added.
The NSCIA called on Muslims nationwide to remain vigilant for the Ramadan crescent on the night of Friday, 28th February 2025, and to await the official announcement from the President-General regarding the start of the 1446 AH Ramadan fast.
He wished Nigerian Muslims and their global counterparts a blessed Ramadan in advance.
