  • El-Rufai, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Social Democratic Party, said they thought Tinubu would replicate his success in Lagos.

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has opened up on why he backed president Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general election despite the scandal that plagued his campaign.

Recall that Tinubu’s electioneering in the build up to the 2023 presidential election was dogged by Chicago University certificate forgery scandal and drug trafficking indictment in the United States.

According to reports at the time, Tinubu claim of attending the university was found to be false and he also indicted in drug trafficking by the FBI.

Speaking in a recent interview with BBC, El-Rufai who said he was aware of the reports on his past activities but decided to support him because he was confident in his ability.

El-Rufai, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Social Democratic Party, said they thought Tinubu would replicate his success in Lagos.

El-Rufai said: “What pains me is that the government we supported and had confidence in would do well, because we saw what Tinubu did in Lagos despite his challenges.

“We all know about his issues in Chicago, but we thought if he could replicate his work in Lagos for Nigeria, let’s support him. However, he failed.

“I never betrayed Atiku Abubakar because we didn’t meet in politics; we met at work. In work, if I see that he didn’t do well, whoever he is, I will tell him. I told Buhari, and I even took Buhari to court on the new naira issue.
