- Lawmakers denied Fubara entry into Assembly Quarters when he attempted to re-present the 2025 Budget after Supreme Court’s ruling.
- Governor claimed he notified Amaewhule of his visit, but the Assembly insisted they never received any communication from him.
President Bola Tinubu is set to speak to Nigerians today (Tuesday) through a national broadcast concerning the situation in Rivers State, his media aide Bayo Onanuga confirmed.
“The NTA and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria will transmit the broadcast at 7 pm.
“All TV and radio stations are requested to link up with the broadcast,” Onanuga said.
The prolonged conflict and struggle for dominance between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and his former political protégé, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, persist.
On March 12, 2025, lawmakers aligned with Wike stopped the governor from entering the Assembly Quarters when he arrived to resubmit the 2025 Budget, as required by the House.
The governor stated he informed Amaewhule about his intended visit, but the Assembly claimed it did not receive any official communication regarding the matter.
As the crisis unfolded in the South-South state on Wednesday, Wike, during a media interaction in Abuja, remarked that lawmakers had every right to remove Fubara from office.
He alleged that Fubara committed impeachable offences, including the non-payment of their salaries for several months, which could justify his removal from office.
Pro-Wike lawmakers proceeded to issue the governor a misconduct notice and then suspended all legislative activities indefinitely.
Amidst rising political tension, reports emerged of pipeline explosions in the state, while civil servants threatened large-scale demonstrations against Martins Amaewhule’s faction in the Assembly.
Speculations have arisen regarding the potential imposition of a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the ongoing political crisis.
Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution defines a state of emergency as a national crisis requiring the suspension of normal constitutional processes to restore governmental authority.
Declaring a state of emergency grants the President immediate authority to introduce regulations necessary to maintain law, order, and security.
