- A section of the pipeline, which is a vital export line for crude oil to the Bonny Terminal, was severely damaged by the explosion
The Trans-Niger Pipeline in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State has exploded, igniting a massive conflagration.
The cause of the Monday night explosion has not been established, although it is gathered that investigations have begun.
A section of the pipeline, which is a vital export line for crude oil to the Bonny Terminal, was severely damaged by the explosion.
Officials are yet to confirm whether the incident resulted from sabotage as tension rises amid the worsening political crisis and uncertainty in the oil-rich State.
Authorities are not ruling out the possibility of militant involvement, given recent threats against oil facilities.
The threats come amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, are locked in a fierce power struggle over political control.
The governor is also facing impeachment after lawmakers loyal to the FCT minister, Wike, served him and his deputy a notice of misconduct allegations.
