Heavily armed soldiers have occupied the Rivers Government House in Port Harcourt after President Bola Tinubu announced a state of emergency on Tuesday night.

Tinubu made this declaration in response to the ongoing political turmoil affecting the state.

As part of this action, the president also placed Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, on suspension for an initial period of six months.

Additionally, all elected lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly have been suspended as well.

To oversee the state’s administration, Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator responsible for governance.

Shortly after this announcement was made during a national broadcast, military personnel arrived in fully loaded trucks, securing the Government House entrance.

Tinubu’s speech was delivered just hours after a discussion with his service chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
