COVID-19: 15 states conducting contact tracing, 1986 travellers test positive – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Monday said contact tracing of those who were exposed to COVID-19 infections were being conducted in 15 states.

The NCDC, which disclosed this in its latest report, also stated that 1,986 travellers tested positive for the virus in the last one week.

It said it sent response teams to the annual convention of the Living Faith Church popularly known as Shiloh and the Holy Ghost convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God both in Ogun State.

The Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, a few days ago had announced that the country had slipped into a fourth wave following a 500 per cent increase in the number of cases.

The Federal Government through the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 announced restrictions and also promised to introduce further restrictions following an increase in the number of cases.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration on Saturday also announced certain restrictions following an over 1,000 per cent increase in cases.

The NCDC in its latest report said case findings and contact tracing were ongoing in 15 states. Even though the centre failed to disclose the states involved, it noted that 1,986 travelers tested positive in one week. The figure is higher than the 845 positive cases reported in the past week according to the NCDC.

It added, “We deployed a national rapid Response team to support the Shiloh and Holy Ghost congress events held in Ogun State, Supported the monitoring of compliance to protocols and non-pharmceutical interventions during the Shiloh and Holy Ghost Congress events in Ogun State.

“Ongoing case finding and contact tracing in 15 states, ongoing supportive supervision for trained contact tracers in Akwa Ibom, Kaduna, Kano, and Oyo states, Continue follow-up with University College Hospital, Ibadan and the FCT on infection rise in respective health facilities, On-going distribution of RDT kits to Lagos State Biobank Laboratory, Central Public Health Laboratory, Yaba and Centre for Disease Control.

Furthermore, the NCDC said, “In Week 50, the number of in-bound international travellers tested was 8,306 of which 522 (were positive compared to 285 (out of 8,597 tested) in week 49.

“In Week 50, the number of out-bound international travelers tested was 8,421 of which 1,464 were positive compared to 560 out of 7,520 tested in week 49.

As regards testing, the centre noted that there was a slight increase in the number of tested samples. It said, “In Week 50, the number of samples tested increased to 73,919 from 62,537 reported in week 49.”
