Police arrest officer who extorted N3m from Ghana returnee in Bayelsa, recover funds

  • The arrest follows a complaint from Liberty Isaac Kelechi

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of an officer involved in the brutalisation and extortion of N3 million from a Ghana returnee in Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria.

The spokesperson for the police Zone 16 in Yenagoa, SP Gunn Ewhoborwo Emonena, revealed to SaharaReporters on Saturday that the team leader responsible for the extortion has been arrested, and the stolen N3 million has been recovered.

“He’s in Abuja for trial, dismissal, and charging to court. We, the Nigerian police, are the only organisation that disciplines our own,” Emonena said.

The arrest follows a complaint from Liberty Isaac Kelechi, who alleged that five policemen at a Bayelsa checkpoint forced him at gunpoint to transfer N3 million to two accounts they provided. Kelechi, travelling to Imo State on August 26, 2024, said the officers threatened to kill him if he refused to comply.
