  • Senator Nenadi Usman reveals the Labour Party narrowly avoided de-registration by INEC after a successful stakeholders meeting on September 4
  • Usman emphasizes unity within the party, urging members to set aside differences and work towards a transparent national convention

Senator Nenadi Usman, the Chairman of the Labour Party National Caretaker Committee (LP-NCC), revealed that the party narrowly avoided de-registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) due to swift intervention at the September 4 Stakeholders meeting in Umuahia.

Speaking to journalists after the committee’s inaugural meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Senator Usman emphasized the importance of unity within the party. She stated, “On September 4 at Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, no team, group, or faction within our party was defeated. Everyone emerged victorious as one political family, by the law. We collectively escaped the de-registration threat by INEC, which would have removed our party from its records for not having legally recognized leadership that meets the country’s Electoral Act requirements.”

Senator Usman expressed her desire to be remembered for uniting a party in conflict and disunity, transforming it into a formidable, nationwide election-winning force. She called on aggrieved members to set aside their differences and join hands with the committee. “Come forward and let us reason on my committee’s supreme mandate. This is the mandate to deliver to our party, in about three months, exemplary unifying state congresses nationwide,” she added.

She explained that the goal is to culminate in a transparent, inclusive national convention that will elect the party’s next substantive National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) and, ultimately, the country’s next leadership.

Senator Usman noted that the party’s situation could have forced INEC to deregister them, but this was successfully averted at the September 4 meeting in Umuahia.

Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, the acting Chairman of the NLC Political Commission, also urged party members to put aside their differences and work with the committee to advance the party’s cause.
