  • Mali accused Ukraine of supporting terrorism in the Sahel, urging the UN Security Council to address Ukraine’s destabilizing actions in the region
  • The Malian government presented evidence of Ukraine’s alleged involvement with separatist groups, claiming it jeopardizes national and regional stability

Mali has accused Ukraine of backing terrorism in the Sahel region, according to Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop. During a recent summit in New York, Diop expressed strong condemnation of Ukraine’s alleged support for terrorist activities, particularly in the Sahel.

He called on the UN Security Council to address Ukraine’s role in destabilizing the region.

The Sahel, home to several West African nations including Mali, continues to face rising terrorist threats.

Malian authorities claim that Ukraine has a long-standing alliance with the Azawad separatists, a group recently linked to terrorism. This cooperation, according to Mali, jeopardizes both national and regional stability.

Mali presented what it claims is clear evidence of Ukraine’s support, including involvement in an attack on Tinzaouaten. Testimonies from Azawad fighters and Ukrainian intelligence sources were cited as proof.

Additionally, a recent attack on military installations in Bamako by the JNIM group has intensified concerns, as satellite images with Ukrainian inscriptions were found on the attackers’ devices.

Diop reiterated his plea to the UN Security Council to take action. This follows earlier complaints made by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, accusing Ukraine of fueling instability in the region.

Diop stressed that the international community must act decisively, as the support of terrorism in Mali threatens broader regional security.
