  • The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is working to stabilize the national grid after a disturbance at 11:29 AM on Thursday, November 7.
  • A sudden rise in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz reportedly triggered the disruption, linked to issues at one of TCN’s substation.
  • TCN warns that some degree of instability may persist until all repairs are completed.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that efforts to stabilize the national grid are ongoing following a disturbance that occurred at 11:29 AM on Thursday, November 7.

The disruption was caused by a sudden rise in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, which prompted immediate action from the company to restore power.

In a statement released from Abuja, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, explained that the disturbance was triggered by an issue at one of TCN’s substations, which had to be shut down to prevent further complications.

As part of recovery efforts, the Abuja region was restored within 28 minutes of the disturbance.

”In addition to this, we are actively engaged in significant repair work on several critical transmission lines and substations.

”These includes the 330 Kilo Volt (kV) transmission lines along the Shiroro–Mando axis, major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission substation, and the restoration of the second Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV transmission line,” Mbah said.

Mbah also highlighted that these developments are part of TCN’s broader strategy to address weaknesses identified in a recent investigative report on previous grid collapses.

She assured that the company is committed to addressing these gaps through both technical upgrades and strategic interventions in line with the committee’s recommendations.

Despite these efforts, Mbah cautioned that some instability in the grid might persist until all major repairs are completed.

”These efforts include both technical upgrades and strategic interventions, based on the committee’s recommendations.

”However, it is important to note that while these repairs and improvements are underway, some degree of instability in the system is likely to persist until all major works are completed, she said.

She appealed for the understanding and patience of the public, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by these disruptions.

”The TCN acknowledges the impact of these disruptions and asks for the understanding and patience of the public during this challenging period, ”she added.
