Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has emphasised the need for improved safety protocols on Nigeria’s waterways.

This call was made following a boat accident that occurred on the River Niger, resulting in over 200 persons capsized.

Eight bodies were recovered during a rescue operation led by local divers, with traders and farmers among the victims.

Governor Ododo expressed his condolences through a statement issued by his media aide, Ismaila Isah.

He mourned the loss of lives, particularly women, traders, and artisans, who contribute significantly to the state’s economy.

“The waterway linking Kogi and Niger states was becoming increasingly dangerous due to frequent boat accidents,” he stated.

Ododo urged relevant authorities to implement safety measures to minimize risks associated with water transportation.

He commended the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) for their search and rescue efforts, highlighting the importance of collaborative measures to prevent waterway accidents.
