  • He later challenged Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the court.

The Labour Party (LP) gubernatorial candidate in 2023, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has announced his intention to run for governor of Lagos State in 2027.

He made this declaration during an interview with Iyabo Ojo, a renowned Nollywood actress, on Gold Room.

“By God’s grace (I will run for governorship again in 2027), we are working. We gained a lot of traction. saw our mistakes. We saw the loopholes we made, and we’re working on that,” he stated.

He also affirmed his determination to learn from past errors and make progress.

Rhodes-Vivour emphasized the importance of opposition voices in Lagos politics. “I think the biggest mistake that has happened in Lagos politics is after elections, the opposition goes quiet, which is not, that is not happening this time.”

He vowed to maintain a strong presence, engaging with citizens and addressing key issues.

The Labour Party candidate has been working tirelessly to improve healthcare access. “We’re in people’s faces.

We’re doing our best in terms of health outreaches. We have a micro health insurance plan that we’re taking all across the state where people can get treatment of up to N6,000 for free.”

This initiative demonstrates his commitment to social welfare.

Rhodes-Vivour also criticized the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for excessive spending despite widespread hardship.

“For instance, when we called out that Governor Sanwo-Olu is using taxpayers’ money to pay his own personal legal bills, or how they’re using almost 200 million, or how they use almost 2 billion to say they wanted to buy fans, or spending billions on consultants for bus routes and bus networks,” he said.

He stressed the need for accountability and transparency.

“So, with the level of suffering that Nigerians are dealing with, Lagosians are dealing with, we need to have accountability and transparency, and our government must be using our money in the most efficient way possible.” This call to action underscores his focus on responsible governance.

Recall that in March 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Babajide Sanwo-Olu the winner of the Lagos governorship election. Sanwo-Olu secured 762,134 votes, defeating Rhodes-Vivour, who garnered 312,329 votes.

Abdulazeez Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came third with 62,449 votes. Rhodes-Vivour contested the result, but the Lagos governorship election tribunal dismissed his case in September 2023.

He filed 21 grounds of appeal, which the court of appeal in Lagos dismissed in November 2023.

The supreme court later affirmed Sanwo-Olu as the duly elected governor of Lagos State.
